 Agriculture is the main food/feed/medicine/fiber for humans and animals. Sustainable agriculture is the main road to job opportunities, a decent life, investment opportunities, and environmental protection. The Kingdom’s vision focuses on agriculture to achieve food security, find new opportunities to invest in agricultural industries, and achieve self-sufficiency to reduce imports and increase exports.
Recently, sustainable agriculture has received significant attention in light of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 and the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture plans for the King Salman Program for Sustainable Agricultural Rural Development. In addition to the two initiatives of the Crown Prince, “Green Saudi Arabia and the Green Middle East,” which aims to reduce global warming, reduce pests, climate change, and desertification, enhance health and raise the quality of life for citizens and residents within the axis of a vibrant society and create millions of new job opportunities.
The Agricultural Sustainability Group will contribute to improving the concept and applications of sustainable farming practices and agriculture research, education, and training, in addition to the transfer and localization of technologies appropriate to the local environment in the Kingdom. The group goals target tangible achievements in areas such as traditional and organic agricultural production, production of crops, fruits, and vegetables, and the provision of animal protein, poultry production, fish, and plant protection. It also focuses on soil fertility and preservation, land conservation, decreased desertification, preservation of forests and natural resources, an increase of green spaces, post-harvest transactions for agricultural production, environmental protection. Our goals are to focus on food security and safety, improve product quality, increase food resources, and introduce new fodder to achieve ecological sustainability. The research group will include scientific, applied, and basic research and will support undergraduate and post-graduate students in research and acquiring the necessary expertise to enter the labor market and encourage small projects and entrepreneurship.
